White House AI Czar Sacks Steps Down, Shifts to Advisory Role
By Global Leaders Insights Team | Mar 27, 2026
White House artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency adviser David Sacks is stepping down from his current role, marking a shift in the administration’s technology leadership.
Sacks confirmed his decision in an interview, explaining that his term as a “special government employee” had come to an end. Under U.S. rules, this designation allows individuals to serve in government roles for a limited period each year, typically up to 130 days.
Despite stepping down, Sacks will continue to remain involved in policy matters. He is set to take on a new position as co-chair of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, strengthening his role in science and technology advisory efforts while advising on a broader range of issues.

A well-known entrepreneur and Silicon Valley investor, Sacks joined the administration in late 2024 during Donald Trump’s second term. During his time in office, he played a key role in shaping AI policy and broader US innovation policy.
He was closely involved in promoting a pro-innovation approach, including easing some earlier restrictions tied to AI exports policy. His work also contributed to the development of a national artificial intelligence strategy focused on balancing innovation with concerns such as intellectual property, job impact, and free speech.
Sacks indicated that, although he is stepping away from his day-to-day responsibilities as White House AI czar, he will continue to support the administration’s direction on artificial intelligence through his advisory role as a crypto adviser and policy voice.
Beyond technology, he has also drawn attention for his opinions on foreign policy. Recently, he made headlines after suggesting that the United States should scale back its involvement in tensions with Iran — a view that sparked discussion within policy circles.
