SpaceX Plans $100 Billion Starship Spaceport in Louisiana

SpaceX is planning a huge new spaceport in southern Louisiana as it looks to expand its Starship launch operations.

The company is expected to invest about $100 billion in the project, which would be built on a 125,000-acre site near Pecan Island in Vermilion Parish. If completed as planned, the facility could become one of the world's largest commercial space launch sites.

The project is expected to begin construction in 2027, with the first Starship launch from the Louisiana site targeted for as early as 2029.

For SpaceX, the facility would provide another major launch base alongside its existing operations in Texas and Florida. For Louisiana, the project is expected to bring thousands of jobs and significant investment to the state.

New Spaceport to Support Starship Expansion

The proposed Starbase Louisiana will be built around SpaceX's Starship program, which the company is developing as a fully reusable rocket system for future space missions. The facility is expected to include five launch complexes, with two launch pads at each complex, as well as areas for rocket production, fuel operations and other supporting infrastructure.

SpaceX wants the new site to support a very high number of launches once it is fully operational. The company has ambitious plans for Starship, including launching satellites, supporting the expansion of Starlink, carrying cargo and eventually transporting astronauts to the Moon and Mars.

The Louisiana location could also give SpaceX more flexibility as it expands its launch schedule. Having another large launch site would allow the company to spread operations across different locations and increase the number of Starship missions it can conduct.

The proposed scale is significantly larger than SpaceX's current Starbase facility in South Texas. The company has discussed the possibility of eventually carrying out dozens of Starship launches each day from the Louisiana site. Reaching that level, however, will depend on Starship becoming reliable enough for frequent launches and rapid reuse, as well as receiving the necessary regulatory approvals.

Project Expected to Create Thousands of Jobs

Louisiana officials have welcomed the project, describing it as a major opportunity for the state's economy. The development is expected to create around 3,000 direct jobs over the next decade, while construction and related industries could generate thousands of additional jobs.

The project is also expected to benefit local businesses through increased demand for construction, transportation, manufacturing, hospitality and other services. SpaceX has agreed to make annual payments to Vermilion Parish in place of local taxes and provide financial support for charitable activities in the area.

At the same time, the proposed Louisiana spaceport has attracted concerns from environmental groups and some local residents. Much of the proposed site consists of coastal wetlands, raising questions about the potential impact of construction on wildlife and the surrounding environment.

SpaceX has said environmental protection will be part of the development. The company is expected to carry out restoration and wildlife protection measures as it builds the facility.

The Louisiana project reflects Elon Musk's broader plans to make Starship the centre of SpaceX's future launch business. If the company succeeds in developing a reliable and rapidly reusable Starship system, the new spaceport could play an important role in increasing launch capacity and lowering the cost of sending payloads into space.
