Russia's PM Visits China for Key Talks as Ties Grow Stronger

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin flew to China on Monday for a two-day trip that the Kremlin calls highly important. He’ll meet top Chinese leaders to deepen ties between the two countries.

The visit starts in Hangzhou, where Mishustin will hold regular talks with Chinese Premier Li Qiang. On Tuesday, he heads to Beijing to sit down with President Xi Jinping, Russia’s TASS news agency reported.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Friday the trip carries “very great” weight, though he wouldn’t say if President Vladimir Putin plans to send a message through Mishustin.

The two nations declared a “no limits” partnership in February 2022, just before Russia invaded Ukraine. Since then, Moscow has leaned heavily on Beijing to ease the blow of Western sanctions. Trade between them has hit record highs, more deals are settled in Chinese yuan, and energy cooperation has grown.

Talks will focus on trade, transport, industry, energy, technology, and farming. A meeting Sunday in Ningbo between Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng highlighted rising Russian exports of copper and nickel, plus wider access for farm goods.

Ongoing U.S.-China tensions over trade and tech—first sharpened under former President Donald Trump—have pushed Russia and China closer, helping both counter Western pressure.
