Brazil Election Race Tightens as Lula and Bolsonaro Close Gap

Brazil's presidential election has become much more competitive, with a new opinion poll showing President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Senator Flavio Bolsonaro separated by just one percentage point in a potential runoff.

The latest survey suggests Bolsonaro has gained ground in recent weeks, making the race one of the closest Brazil has seen in years.

The poll highlights the country's deep political divide as voters weigh economic concerns, public security and government policies ahead of the October election.

Although Lula continues to lead in the first round, the narrowing gap in a runoff indicates that the final outcome is far from certain.

Runoff Race Tightens

The Nexus/BTG Pactual poll released on Monday found that Lula would receive 46% of the vote in a second-round election, while Flavio Bolsonaro would secure 45%. The one-point difference falls within the poll's margin of error, meaning the two candidates are effectively tied.

The latest numbers mark a significant change from the previous Nexus survey conducted in late July, when Lula held a four-point advantage over Bolsonaro, leading 47% to 43%.

In the first-round voting scenario, Lula remains in front with 41% support, followed by Bolsonaro with 37%. Other candidates are well behind, with Ronaldo Caiado polling at 5%, Renan Santos at 4% and Romeu Zema at 3%.

Under Brazil's electoral system, a candidate must win more than half of the valid votes in the first round to avoid a runoff. If no one crosses that mark, the top two candidates will compete in a second-round vote later in October.

The poll also shows Bolsonaro gaining momentum. In the previous survey, he had 33% support in the first round. His rise to 37% suggests his campaign has attracted more voters as the election draws closer.

Campaigns Gather Pace

With the election approaching, both candidates are stepping up their campaigns across the country. Lula is focusing on his government's economic growth, social welfare programmes and plans to maintain growth and reduce inequality.

Flavio Bolsonaro, the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, is campaigning on promises of public security, economic reforms and changes to the current administration's policies. His campaign is also working to attract moderate voters while maintaining support from conservative groups.

Political observers say the latest poll reflects how divided Brazil remains. While Lula continues to enjoy strong backing among his supporters, Bolsonaro's recent gains suggest many undecided voters could play a decisive role in the final result.

The election campaign is taking place at a time when issues such as inflation, jobs, public spending and economic growth remain high on voters' priorities. These concerns are expected to shape the campaign over the coming weeks as both candidates try to strengthen their support.
