North Korean leader Kim Jong Un vowed full support for Russia’s military actions, calling it a “brotherly duty,” during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Beijing, according to North Korea’s state media, KCNA.

The two leaders met on the sidelines of China’s grand celebration marking 80 years since Japan’s surrender in World War II, highlighting the growing bond between their countries. Kim and Putin, joined by Chinese President Xi Jinping at a massive military parade, talked about strengthening their partnership for the long haul.

Putin described the relationship as one built on trust, friendship, and a strong alliance. Kim thanked Russia for honoring North Korean soldiers involved in Ukraine’s conflict. This meeting, the first time Kim and Putin joined Xi together, brought back memories of Cold War alliances.

The summit comes after Kim and Putin signed a mutual defense pact in June 2024, promising to help each other if attacked. North Korea has been aiding Russia’s efforts in Ukraine by sending soldiers, artillery, and missiles. South Korea’s intelligence reports estimate 2,000 North Korean troops have died, with plans to send 6,000 more, including 1,000 already in Russia. This cooperation has alarmed Western countries, with some experts warning of a new “Axis of Upheaval” involving Russia, North Korea, and possibly China.

For Kim, visiting Beijing for the first time since the pandemic, the summit was a chance to meet over two dozen world leaders and boost his global profile. The event also let Xi showcase China’s military and diplomatic power amid tensions with the West over trade and regional issues. Putin invited Kim to Russia for a future visit, signaling their partnership will grow. With North Korea under heavy international sanctions for its nuclear program, this alliance gives Kim economic and political support, while Russia gains a key ally in its ongoing war.
