U.S. designates four European Extremist Groups as Terror Groups

The United States on Thursday designated four militant groups based in Germany, Italy, and Greece as foreign terrorist organizations, expanding Washington’s counter-extremism actions in Europe.

The State Department said the designation covers Antifa Ost in Germany, Italy’s Informal Anarchist Federation/International Revolutionary Front, and two Greek groups — Armed Proletarian Justice and Revolutionary Class Self-Defense. The measures take effect on November 20 and impose financial and travel restrictions under U.S. law.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the groups follow anarchist or Marxist-inspired ideologies and have been linked to multiple violent attacks. He said the United States aims to disrupt their ability to raise funds, plan operations, and coordinate with like-minded networks.

According to the State Department, Antifa Ost carried out attacks in Germany and Hungary from 2018 to 2023. German intelligence classified it as a violent extremist network in 2024, leading to a series of arrests between late 2023 and 2024.

In Greece, Revolutionary Class Self-Defense claimed responsibility for an explosion at a railway operator in April and for an attack on the labour ministry in 2024. Armed Proletarian Justice said it planted a 2023 bomb near riot-police headquarters in Goudi.

Officials in Italy and Germany did not comment immediately after the announcement. A Greek official, speaking anonymously, said the government rejects all violent extremist activity.

The decision signals the United States’ growing focus on violent non-state groups operating in Europe. U.S. officials said the designations are intended to prevent the organizations from accessing global financial systems and expanding their operational reach.

The State Department stated it will continue reviewing intelligence on similar groups and may take additional action if required.
