UK Liberal Democrats Urge Cancellation of King Charles US Visit

Britain’s Liberal Democrat leader has urged the government to cancel King Charles III’s proposed trip to the United States, arguing that recent comments by U.S. President Donald Trump about the United Kingdom could place the monarch in a difficult political position.

Sir Ed Davey said the visit should be reconsidered after Trump publicly criticized the British government and its leadership. According to Davey, proceeding with the trip could send the wrong diplomatic signal at a time when UK–US relations between the two allies have become more visible.

The dispute follows remarks by Trump about British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Trump suggested that Starmer was “not Winston Churchill” and accused him of weakening the historic special relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom

He also criticized Britain’s earlier reluctance to allow U.S. military bases in the UK to be used during operations connected to rising tensions with Iran conflict tensions.

Davey said a royal visit during this period could risk placing the King in the middle of political disagreement between the two governments. He argued that the monarch should not be drawn into disputes linked to political leaders or foreign policy debates.

“The King should not be used to smooth over political disagreements,” Davey said, urging Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government to postpone or cancel the proposed visit until diplomatic tensions ease.

Members of the government have defended the importance of royal diplomacy. Environment Secretary Steve Reed said royal visits have long played a role in maintaining relationships between countries, even when political disagreements arise.

Buckingham Palace has not commented on the issue and has not officially confirmed details of any upcoming trip to the United States.

Royal visits have historically been used as part of Britain’s diplomatic outreach to Washington. King Charles hosted Trump during his earlier Trump UK state visit, while Prince William’s US visit later this year is expected to include environmental and diplomatic engagements.

The debate reflects wider divisions within British politics about how the country should manage relations with Trump’s administration while maintaining the long-standing alliance between the United States and the United Kingdom.
