Starmer Speaks with Trump After Iran Strikes Row Tests UK-US Ties

UK prime minister Sir Keir Starmer held a phone call with US president Donald Trump on Sunday to address tensions after Trump criticised the UK’s support for US-led strikes on Iran.

The conversation, confirmed by Downing Street, followed Trump’s public criticism of the UK’s reluctance to back the offensive, raising questions about the future of the UK-US “special relationship.”

Trump lambasted Starmer’s government on social media, saying Britain’s help was “not needed” and declaring:

“We don’t need people that join wars after we’ve already won!”—a remark reflecting his frustration at what he saw as delayed and limited UK support for the conflict.

The Downing Street statement said the leaders discussed ongoing military cooperation, particularly using Royal Air Force bases for operations supporting security in the Middle East. Starmer also conveyed condolences for the deaths of six US service personnel.

Tensions flared after Starmer’s government refused to grant Trump early access to British airbases, angering US officials and prompting criticism from some UK political figures. Former prime minister Tony Blair urged stronger support for the US action, claiming the UK should have stood alongside its ally from the start.

However, Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper rejected Blair’s call, highlighting lessons from the 2003 Iraq War and emphasising decisions that reflect British interests. UK forces have since allowed US aircraft to operate from RAF bases for defensive operations against Iranian threats, although divisions remain in Westminster.

Starmer has faced criticism from opposition parties, arguing his cautious approach has weakened British influence. Many in his own party, however, defend the decision as prudent and legally sound. Public opinion in the UK is divided on deeper military involvement.

Despite the disagreement, the talks signal that both leaders aim to maintain dialogue and cooperation, navigating one of the most challenging moments in UK-US relations.
