Trump to Host Armenia, Azerbaijan Leaders for Peace Talks

President Donald Trump will welcome the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan to the White House to tackle their long-running conflict, according to a U.S. officials.
The focus is on finding peace over Nagorno-Karabakh, a region that’s been a source of tension for decades, with hopes of sketching out a deal. The Washington Post broke the news about the meeting.
The trouble over Nagorno-Karabakh started back in the late 1980s. It’s a region inside Azerbaijan but was home to many ethnic Armenians until Azerbaijan took it back in September 2023.
That led to nearly 100,000 Armenians fleeing to Armenia. Both countries, independent since the Soviet Union’s collapse in 1991, have fought three wars over the area, including a brutal 2020 clash that killed over 6,600 people. Armenia says Azerbaijan is trying to wipe out its cultural heritage there, but Azerbaijan claims it’s keeping everyone safe.

In March 2025, the two nations drafted a peace agreement, but things haven’t moved smoothly, with occasional fighting along their 1,000-km border. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev met in Abu Dhabi in July, but they didn’t make much headway. This week’s talks could be a big moment, with the U.S. official suggesting a peace plan might take shape.
Trump’s been vocal about wanting to bring peace to the region, even taking jabs at Vice President Kamala Harris for not doing enough when Armenians were displaced in 2023. His team thinks a deal could pave the way for Azerbaijan to join the Abraham Accords, boosting ties with Israel.
