Tensions between Donald Trump and California increased on Monday when the Pentagon sent around 700 Marines and joined National Guard forces dealing with the current immigration protests. At the same time, California said it would sue the Trump administration, while protests in the city took place on their fourth day in a row.

According to US Northern Command, the Marines sent out of their base in Twentynine Palms in California will be responsible for the protection of federal property and workers, including immigration agents.

Immigration authorities’ arrest of more than 40 people in Los Angeles on Friday led to the deployment. Trouble arose that day as people protested outside a federal detention centre, asking for the release of those being deported by Trump’s team.

  • Trump deploys 700 Marines, 2,000 Guards amid LA immigration protests.
  • California sues, citing violation of state authority and federal law.
  • Protests intensify after arrests, including union leader David Huerta.

The US Department of Defense sent 700 Marines and nearly 2,000 National Guard members to Los Angeles, even though using them in this way is forbidden by the Posse Comitatus Act and without activating the Insurrection Act. According to Governor Newsom and Attorney General Bonta, who strongly criticized the action, it violates their state’s authority and breaks federal law, so they filed a lawsuit against it.

The LAPD Chief claimed that people not collaborating would make things more troublesome practically. Trump justified the military involvement, expecting it would stop the city from failing and accusing the state’s officials of failing to respond. There was a rise in protests all across Los Angeles due to confirmed federal immigration operations and larger demonstrations. After David Huerta was arrested and later let out on bail, the activists’ determination increased. Several arrests occurred after people threw molotov cocktails and attacked police on motorcycles in violent incidents.
