Trump Ties $5,000 Payment to Midterm Results

Trump said the payment would be given to every adult US citizen if Republicans retain control of both chambers of Congress. He called it a “dividend” linked to the country’s economic strength and said the money would need to be spent in the United States.

“Because of our tremendous economic success and strength, I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States for $5,000,” Trump said at the convention.

Trump did not explain how the proposed payments would be funded or when they could be made. It is also unclear what eligibility rules would apply and how the programme would be administered.

The cost could be very large. A $5,000 payment to hundreds of millions of eligible adults could put the total bill at more than $1 trillion. That would raise questions about where the money would come from and what effect such a programme could have on the federal budget.

Trump has previously discussed giving money back to Americans using government revenue. His administration had earlier floated a $2,000 tariff payment, although such a plan would require congressional approval.

New Pledge Follows other Trump Payment Plans
