North Korea's Kim Calls for Military Revolution to Strengthen Army

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has called for stronger army units, urging military commanders to improve combat readiness and build forces that can operate independently.
His remarks came during a meeting of army company commanders in Pyongyang, as the country continues to strengthen its military capabilities.
The two-day meeting, held on October 22 and 23, brought together military officials to discuss the country's defence priorities.
According to North Korean state media, Kim stressed the need for army companies to meet the goals of the country's military development plans and improve their ability to respond to potential threats.

Kim Pushes for Stronger Army Units
Kim told military commanders that army companies must become more capable and better prepared for combat. He called for improvements in training, discipline and the ability of individual units to carry out operations effectively.
"Let us build the strongest army and speed up a military revolution in our style," Kim said, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), North Korea's state-run news agency.
Army companies form the basic operational units of a military force. By focusing on these units, Kim is seeking to improve the army's strength at the ground level rather than relying only on larger military formations and advanced weapons.
The meeting also highlighted the responsibility of commanders in carrying out the country's military plans. Kim urged them to ensure their units were prepared to meet the targets set by the leadership.
The gathering reflects North Korea's continued focus on military readiness under Kim's leadership. The government has repeatedly stressed the need to strengthen its armed forces as regional security tensions remain high.
Nuclear and Missile Development Remain Key Priorities
Kim's latest remarks follow the ruling Workers' Party of Korea's Ninth Congress in February, where he called for stronger conventional military forces and continued development of the country's nuclear weapons programme and missile development programme.
The latest meeting suggests that improving the army's day-to-day capabilities remains an important part of North Korea's broader defence plans. Alongside developing new weapons, the country is looking to improve training and ensure its military units can carry out their duties effectively.
North Korea's nuclear and missile programmes have raised concerns among neighbouring countries and the wider international community. Its weapons development and missile tests have added to tensions on the Korean Peninsula and complicated efforts to improve relations with South Korea and the United States.
However, the latest state media report did not announce specific new weapons, military deployments or changes to North Korea's operational plans. Kim's remarks focused mainly on improving army companies and making them more effective.
The emphasis on stronger units also highlights the importance Pyongyang places on military discipline and preparedness. Better-trained units could help the country improve its conventional military capabilities as it continues to invest in advanced weapons.
North Korea has not publicly provided detailed targets for implementing Kim's latest instructions or explained how the success of the proposed changes will be measured.

Kim's call for a military revolution signals that North Korea intends to continue strengthening its conventional forces while pursuing its nuclear and missile programmes. These priorities are likely to remain a concern for regional governments as they monitor developments on the Korean Peninsula.
