Key Highlights

  • Positive U.S.-Iran Talks: President Trump reported “very good talks” with Iran regarding its nuclear program and hinted at a potentially positive announcement within two days.
  • Negotiation Goals: The discussions aim to curb Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for easing U.S. economic sanctions, part of Trump’s revived “maximum pressure” strategy.
  • Upcoming IAEA Review: A meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, which will evaluate Iran’s nuclear activities.

After holding "some very good talks with Iran", US President Donald Trump on Sunday suggested that an announcement could come regarding the nuclear program deal in the "next two days".

Trump told reporters in northern New Jersey, "We've had some very, very good talks with Iran. And I don't know if I'll be telling you anything good or bad over the next two days, but I have a feeling I might be telling you something good." He highlighted that in the talks between the US and Iran over the weekend, there was some "real and serious" progress, The Associated Press reported.

"I’d love that to happen, because I’d love to see no bombs dropped, and a lot of people dead,” he said, adding that, "Let's see what happens, but I think we could have some good news on the Iran front."

The Omani mediator was apparently less hopeful than Trump during the US and Iran discussions. According to the mediator on Friday, the two sides realized some advances in round five of discussions in Rome. At the talks, the American delegation included Trump’s Mideast adviser Steve Witkoff and Michael Anton from the State Department’s policy planning group.

American and Iranian officials are talking about limiting Iran’s nuclear program if the US lifts some of its sanctions on the country. After returning to the White House in January, Trump increased his pressure on Iran and supported negotiations, but also warned of what could happen if talks fail.

Iran has and continues to call for a new agreement to help lessen the United States sanctions that troubled its economy, according to AFP. The talks are held in advance of a meeting of the IAEA, a UN nuclear watchdog, in June, when Iran's activities will be under discussion.
