Trump Considers China Visit at Xi's Invitation Amid Trade Tensions
By Global Leaders Insights Team | Jul 29, 2025

President Donald Trump took to Truth Social on Tuesday to clear up rumors about a potential meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. “The Fake News is reporting that I am SEEKING a ‘Summit’ with President Xi of China. This is not correct, I am not SEEKING anything! I may go to China, but it would only be at the invitation of President Xi, which has been extended. Otherwise, no interest!”
Talks are swirling that Trump and Xi’s teams are hashing out a possible face-to-face during Trump’s upcoming Asia trip, likely around the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in South Korea from October 30 to November 1.
It’d be their first in-person chat since Trump kicked off his second term in January 2025, with U.S.-China relations stuck in a rough patch over trade and security.

Right now, both countries are trying to keep a lid on their trade war. In Stockholm, U.S. Treasury Chief Scott Bessent and China’s Vice Premier He Lifeng are working to extend a tariff truce that’s set to expire on August 12. The U.S. has been hitting Chinese goods with tariffs as high as 55%, and it’s been a sore point for both sides. If these talks go well, they could pave the way for a Trump-Xi meeting this fall.
Trump’s been vocal about using tariffs to boost American jobs, but he’s also hinted at a decent relationship with Xi. A trip to China could be a chance to sort out big issues like trade barriers, tech disputes, and tensions in the region—though nothing’s set in stone yet.

With the world watching and markets jittery, everyone’s wondering if these talks, or a possible Trump-Xi meetup, could calm things down before the holiday season. For now, it’s wait-and-see whether this invitation turns into a real visit.
