President Donald Trump made a statement on Thursday announcing Secretary of State Marco Rubio as the acting National Security Advisor following his nomination of Mike Waltz for the United Nations ambassador position.
President Trump performed employee shifts after Waltz and his deputy Alex Wong left the administration when Waltz sent a journalist Signal messages about military plans during a previous weeks. Trump officially stated that Rubio would stay in his position as secretary of state. The recent personnel changes at the State Department stem from the administration's controversy in managing sensitive communication channels while Waltz and Wong left their posts after the incident was revealed leading Trump to involve himself in the matter and reassert Rubio's government position.
“I am pleased to announce that I will be nominating Mike Waltz to be the next United States Ambassador to the United Nations. From his time in uniform on the battlefield, in Congress and, as my National Security Advisor, Mike Waltz has worked hard to put our Nation's Interests first. In the interim, Secretary of State Marco Rubio will serve as National Security Advisor, while continuing his strong leadership at the State Department. Together, we will continue to fight tirelessly to Make America, and the World, SAFE AGAIN,” Trump wrote on social media.
