Thailand’s former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra has been released after completing his prison term, a development that has once again fueled Thailand political debate across the country.

The release of the influential leader has drawn strong reactions from both supporters and critics, highlighting the deep divisions that continue to shape Thailand politics.

Thaksin, 76, walked out of Bangkok’s Klong Prem Central Prison on parole on Monday under strict monitoring conditions, including the use of an electronic ankle bracelet.

Supporters gathered outside the prison to welcome him, waving banners and cheering as he reunited with family members, including his daughter Paetongtarn Shinawatra.

The billionaire businessman and former telecom tycoon served as Thailand prime minister from 2001 until he was removed from power in a military coup in 2006. After spending nearly 15 years in self-imposed exile, he returned to Thailand in 2023 and was immediately taken into custody to face corruption charges and abuse-of-power allegations linked to his administration.

Initially sentenced to eight years in prison, Thaksin later received a royal pardon that reduced his sentence to one year. Much of his sentence was served in a hospital due to health-related concerns, a move that triggered criticism from opponents who claimed he was receiving special treatment because of his political influence and wealth.

The controversy deepened when Thailand Supreme Court ruled in 2025 that his extended hospital stay had allowed him to avoid serving time in prison properly. He was later ordered back into custody to complete the remainder of his sentence before eventually qualifying for parole release.

Despite years of political turmoil and legal battles, Thaksin remains one of Thailand’s most influential political figures. His supporters continue to praise him for introducing healthcare reforms and welfare programmes that improved the lives of millions of rural and low-income citizens.

However, critics argue that his political network still exerts influence behind the scenes, contributing to ongoing tensions within the country’s fragile political system. His release is expected to intensify political discussions in Thailand in the coming months as rival factions continue to compete for influence and public support.
