Elon Musk Partners With Anthropic in Surprise AI Compute Deal
By Global Leaders Insights Team | May 09, 2026
In a surprising development for the artificial intelligence industry, Elon Musk’s SpaceX has entered into a major computing partnership with Anthropic, strengthening the AI startup’s infrastructure as demand for its Claude AI software continues to surge.
Key Highlights
- Elon Musk imposed strict AI safety conditions while supporting Anthropic’s rapidly growing Claude platform.
- SpaceX will provide Anthropic massive AI computing power through its Colossus 1 supercomputing facility.
The agreement marks an unexpected alliance between two prominent players in the AI race, especially given Musk’s previous criticism of Anthropic and its AI governance approach.
The announcement was made during Anthropic’s developer conference in San Francisco, where the company also unveiled a new Claude AI capability called “Dreaming,” designed to help its models improve by reviewing past sessions, identifying patterns, and updating user context files for more personalized responses.
Anthropic to Use SpaceX’s Colossus 1 Supercomputing Facility
Under the new agreement, Anthropic will gain access to the full computing capabilities of SpaceX’s Colossus 1 data center in Memphis, Tennessee, which reportedly houses over 220,000 Nvidia processors.
The deal is expected to deliver nearly 300 megawatts of additional AI computing capacity to Anthropic within a month, significantly easing infrastructure constraints as the company experiences rapid growth in enterprise adoption of products such as Claude Code, its AI-powered coding assistant.
The partnership also gives SpaceX a high-profile AI customer as it advances its ambitions to become a major player in large-scale AI computing infrastructure ahead of its anticipated IPO.
Musk Sets Strict Conditions for Anthropic Partnership
While confirming the partnership, Elon Musk made it clear that SpaceX’s support comes with conditions tied to AI safety and ethical use.
In a post on X, Musk said: "Just as SpaceX launches hundreds of satellites for competitors with fair terms and pricing, we will provide compute to AI companies that are taking the right steps to ensure it is good for humanity. We reserve the right to reclaim the compute if their AI engages in actions that harm humanity."
He added: "Doing our best to achieve a great future with amazing abundance for all. We will make mistakes, as to err is human, but always take rapid action to address them."
Musk also revealed that SpaceX has shifted its own AI training operations to Colossus 2, freeing up Colossus 1 capacity for external AI clients that align with SpaceX’s vision for responsible AI development.

Musk’s Sharp Reversal on Anthropic
The partnership has surprised many in Silicon Valley because Elon Musk has repeatedly criticized Anthropic in recent years. Earlier this year, Musk publicly attacked the company during its dispute involving Pentagon-linked AI deployments. In February, he accused Anthropic’s AI systems of ideological bias, writing:
"Frankly, I don’t think there is anything you can do to escape the inevitable irony of Anthropic ending up being misanthropic." However, Musk said his recent meetings with Anthropic executives changed his perspective. "No one set off my evil detector. So long as they engage in critical self-examination, Claude will probably be good," Musk wrote.
