Tarique Rahman was sworn in as Bangladesh Prime Minister on Tuesday after his party secured a decisive victory in last week’s parliamentary election, marking a major change in the country’s political leadership.
Rahman, leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), took the oath of office at a ceremony held at the Jatiya Sangsad complex in Dhaka. President Mohammed Shahabuddin administered the oath as members of the new Bangladesh cabinet were also sworn in.
The election, held on February 12, delivered the BNP a strong two-thirds majority in the 350-seat Bangladesh parliament, ending years of rule by the Awami League.

The vote followed a period of political unrest that culminated in the removal of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina from power. Her party, the Awami League, did not take part in the election after its registration was cancelled, a move it has criticised from exile.
Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami recorded its strongest electoral performance in years, while the National Citizen Party (NCP), a new political grouping, emerged as a vocal presence in parliament. Both parties raised objections over parts of the transition process and stayed away from sections of the swearing-in ceremony.
Rahman returned to Bangladesh ahead of the election after spending 17 years in exile. His return and subsequent victory have reshaped Bangladesh politics and brought renewed focus on governance, economic management and institutional reform.
The new government faces immediate challenges, including restoring investor confidence, managing inflation and stabilising public finances. Rahman has appointed a mix of senior party leaders and technocrats to key cabinet positions, signalling a focus on administration and economic policy.
