Peru Congress Removes President Jeri After Debate
By Global Leaders Insights Team | Feb 18, 2026
The Congress of Peru voted on Tuesday to remove President José Jeri after debating allegations that he held undisclosed meetings with a Chinese businessman.
Lawmakers said the meetings were not listed on Jeri’s official agenda and raised questions about political transparency and possible conflict of interest. Jeri denied wrongdoing and told Congress he had not violated any laws. After hours of debate, legislators approved a motion declaring him unfit for office, ending his tenure just months after he assumed the presidency.
The vote marks the latest leadership change in Peru, where clashes between the executive branch and Peru Congress have led to repeated presidential removals in recent years. Jeri took office in October following the ouster of his predecessor, Dina Boluarte, amid disputes over governance crisis and public security.

Under the constitution, the head of Congress is next in line to assume the presidency. Congressional leader Fernando Rospigliosi said he would not automatically take the role, and parties began consultations to determine who would lead both Congress and the country until general elections April 12.
Supporters of the removal said the decision was necessary to address concerns over accountability and restore public trust. Opponents argued that Congress was deepening political instability by removing another sitting president without a criminal conviction.
The latest development adds to uncertainty in a country that has seen frequent cabinet changes and confrontations between branches of government. Despite the political turnover, Peru political crisis has not derailed economic indicators, which remain relatively stable with moderate growth and controlled inflation.
