Syria Joins Global Coalition in New Anti-ISIS Cooperation Deal

Syria has signed a political cooperation declaration with the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, its information minister announced on Monday, marking a new step in its engagement with international counter-terrorism efforts.

The minister said the agreement is purely political and “contains no military components.” He did not share details on how the cooperation will develop or what mechanisms are planned under the declaration.

The signing comes as Syria continues to face security threats from ISIS cells in several regions. The move is seen as an attempt by Damascus to re-enter international discussions on counter-terrorism while keeping its sovereignty intact.

  • Syria signs political cooperation declaration with Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS
  • Deal marks symbolic step in Syria’s re-engagement with global counter-terrorism efforts
  • Agreement excludes military cooperation, focusing on political dialogue and intent

For Syria, the declaration may help restore diplomatic links with some coalition members. For the coalition, Syria’s participation—though limited—adds political weight to efforts aimed at curbing ISIS influence across the region.

Analysts noted that the absence of military coordination means there will be no joint operations, intelligence sharing, or field support for now. The declaration remains a symbolic step, signaling mutual intent rather than practical cooperation.

The agreement could pave the way for future engagement if both sides decide to move beyond political dialogue. For now, the fight against ISIS in Syria continues largely through separate efforts by local and international forces.
