South Korea's Lee to Attend UN Assembly, Visit Mexico This Week

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung will travel to the United States and Mexico from September 21 to 27, combining his participation in the United Nations General Assembly with a state visit to Mexico.

The trip comes as Seoul looks to strengthen ties with key partners and discuss trade, investment and other areas of cooperation.

Lee will first travel to New York for the UN General Assembly, where he is scheduled to deliver a speech and meet UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

He is also expected to hold talks with other world leaders during the gathering before travelling to Mexico for a meeting with President Claudia Sheinbaum.

Lee to Discuss UN Reform and Korean Peninsula

At the UN General Assembly, Lee is expected to outline South Korea’s views on UN reform and strengthening international cooperation. He is also likely to highlight Seoul’s approach to maintaining peace and promoting dialogue on the Korean Peninsula.

Lee’s meeting with Guterres will include discussions on international issues and cooperation. His visit comes as leaders from around the world gather in New York to discuss conflicts, global security, artificial intelligence and other major international issues.

The South Korean president is also seeking meetings with leaders from countries including the United States and Australia. A possible meeting with US President Donald Trump could be closely watched as Seoul and Washington continue talks over a planned $350 billion investment package by South Korea in the United States.

The investment plan is linked to a trade agreement reached by the two countries last year. Officials from both sides are still working out details of the arrangement, including how the investments will be carried out.

Mexico Visit to Focus on Trade and Technology

After his meetings in New York, Lee will travel to Mexico City for a state visit at the invitation of Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. The two leaders are expected to hold a summit on Thursday, followed by a joint press conference and the signing of several agreements.

Trade and investment are expected to be key topics during the talks. South Korea wants to expand cooperation with Mexico in areas such as supply chains, energy, aerospace and defence. Mexico is an important market for South Korean companies and also serves as a base for businesses looking to reach the wider North American market.

The two countries are also expected to discuss cooperation in newer areas such as artificial intelligence and digital technology. Seoul has said it wants to strengthen cooperation on critical minerals supply chains and provide more support for South Korean companies operating in Mexico.

About 560 South Korean companies currently operate in Mexico, according to South Korean officials. The government hopes the visit will create more opportunities for these companies and encourage further investment between the two countries.

Cultural ties are also growing. Mexico is South Korea’s largest K-pop market, adding another important connection between the two countries.

Defence cooperation is expected to be another topic of discussion as Mexico works to modernise its military. South Korean companies could explore opportunities for cooperation in the sector as part of broader bilateral ties.

Lee is scheduled to leave Mexico on Saturday and return to South Korea on Sunday. His weeklong trip will focus on strengthening South Korea’s international partnerships while expanding South Korea-Mexico relations and economic ties.
