Pragmatist Larijani Emerges as Key Power Broker After Khamenei's Death

Veteran Iranian politician Ali Larijani has moved to the center of power in Iran following the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, creating a leadership vacuum at the top of the Islamic Republic.
Khamenei’s death has triggered a period of political uncertainty as senior officials work to maintain stability. State institutions have shifted into emergency coordination, while security forces remain on alert amid concerns about unrest and regional escalation.
Larijani, a long-time establishment figure and former parliament speaker, currently serves as secretary of the Supreme National Security Council. The role places him at the center of decisions on national defense, nuclear policy and internal security.

His longstanding ties to clerical leaders, the Revolutionary Guards and diplomatic circles have strengthened his influence during the transition.
In recent years, Larijani has taken part in nuclear negotiations and regional diplomacy, balancing engagement abroad with firm positions at home. He has also faced sanctions from the United States over alleged involvement in protest crackdowns, underscoring his prominence in Iran’s power structure.
Under Iran’s constitution, the Assembly of Experts is responsible for selecting a new supreme leader. The succession process is expected to be complex, shaped by factional rivalries among conservatives, pragmatists and hardliners. Until a successor is chosen, senior officials are managing core leadership functions.
President Masoud Pezeshkian, judiciary chief Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Eje'i and senior cleric Alireza Arafi are among those overseeing state affairs during the interim period.
The transition comes amid heightened tensions with Israel and Washington, as well as economic strain at home. Analysts say Larijani’s pragmatic reputation could position him as a power broker capable of bridging internal divides, though it remains unclear whether he will seek a formal leadership role or act as a behind-the-scenes broker.

For now, Iran’s political future hinges on how swiftly its clerical establishment can agree on a successor and whether competing factions can avoid confrontation during this Iran leadership crisis and broader Middle East tensions.
