PM Modi Showcases India's Astronomy Legacy at 18th International Olympiad

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation at the ongoing 18th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics, emphasizing its importance as "tradition meeting innovation, spirituality meeting science, curiosity meets creativity."
PM Modi welcomed the gathering from 64 countries, saying, "It is a pleasure to connect with over 300 shining stars from 64 countries. I warmly welcome you."
"The International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics in India brings together tradition and innovation. Spirituality intersects with science. "Curiosity meets creativity," Prime Minister Modi stated in a virtual address.

Referring to India's rich astronomical heritage, he stated, "For centuries, Indians have been observing the skies and asking big questions. For example, in the fifth century, Aryabhatta created zero. He was also the first to claim that the Earth rotates on its axis. "He literally started from scratch and made history."
PM Modi informed the audience that India is home to the world's highest astronomical observatories in Ladakh. He also mentioned the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope in Pune, which he described as one of the world's most sensitive radio telescopes and has helped decode the mysteries of pulsars and galaxies.
"We now have one of the world's highest astronomical observatories in Ladakh. At 4,500 meters above sea level, you can shake hands with the stars. Our giant Metrewave Radio Telescope in Pune is one of the world's most sensitive radio telescopes. It is assisting us in solving the mysteries of pulsars and galaxies. India proudly contributes to global mega-science projects like the Square Kilometre Array, and LIGO India made history. We made the first successful landing close to the south pole of the moon. With the Aditya-L1 solar observatory, we have also set our sights on the sun," the prime minister declared.

Additionally, he was proud that Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla's "historic mission" to the International Space Station was completed.
"Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla finished his ground-breaking trip to the International Space Station last month. All Indians were proud of the occasion, and young adventurers like you were all inspired by it," PM Modi remarked.
