Mexico Opens Inquiry Into Minister Over Son's Diplomatic Stay

Mexico’s government has opened an investigation into Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard after questions emerged about his son’s stay at a diplomatic residence in the United Kingdom during Ebrard’s time as foreign minister.

The inquiry follows reports that Ebrard’s adult son lived for several months at the Mexican ambassador’s residence in London between 2021 and 2022. Authorities are now reviewing whether public resources, government privileges, or diplomatic residence controversy were used inappropriately during that period.

President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that the case is being examined through official channels after complaints were filed with anti-corruption authorities. She said the investigation is part of normal legal procedures and does not automatically suggest wrongdoing.

According to reports, the residence where Ebrard’s son stayed is intended for diplomatic purposes and official government use. Questions have been raised over whether family members should be allowed to stay in such properties and whether support staff at the residence were involved in providing services during the stay. The issue has fueled discussion around government ethics, public accountability, and political transparency.

Ebrard has publicly defended himself, stating that his son’s stay was a personal matter and did not involve public funds. He denied any misuse of taxpayer resources and said he is prepared to cooperate fully with investigators. So far, no formal accusations have been filed against him.

The issue has drawn attention because Ebrard is one of the most recognizable figures in Mexican politics. He previously served as foreign minister and played a major role in international diplomacy before taking over the economy portfolio. His political career has included leadership positions within the ruling Morena party, making this a closely watched Mexico political investigation.

The investigation also carries political importance because Ebrard and Sheinbaum were once rivals during the race to lead the ruling party before the 2024 presidential election. Despite that competition, Sheinbaum later included him in her cabinet, highlighting the broader impact of cabinet scrutiny, government investigation, and political accountability in modern governance.

For now, officials say the review will focus on determining whether any government rules were broken. The findings could influence public debate around ethics, transparency, and the use of state resources by senior officials in Mexico, while keeping attention on Mexican government probe and diplomatic housing rules.
