German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is under growing political pressure after his Christian Democratic Union (CDU) suffered a major setback in two state elections.

In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the party fell below the 5% threshold needed to win seats in the state parliament, while the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) emerged as the largest party. Merz described the result as a “disaster” but said he had no plans to step down.

The CDU also faced a difficult result in Berlin, where the left-wing Die Linke became the largest party.

The results have raised fresh questions about support for Merz and his German coalition government, particularly as Germany continues to deal with weak economic growth and disagreements over key reforms.

CDU Faces Questions After Election Losses

The result in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania was a serious blow for the CDU. The AfD won about 38.3% of the vote, followed by the Social Democrats (SPD) with around 35.4%. The CDU received about 4.9%, leaving it outside the state parliament.

The result adds to the AfD’s recent gains in eastern Germany. Earlier this month, the party also finished first in Saxony-Anhalt. Its growing support has put pressure on Germany’s traditional parties and raised concerns within the CDU about its ability to hold on to voters.

Merz has defended his position and said he plans to continue with the government’s programme. His agenda includes reforms to taxes, pensions and healthcare, along with measures aimed at improving Germany’s economy.

Germany has faced several economic challenges in recent years. Growth has remained weak, while businesses have had to deal with high energy costs, competition from China and other structural problems affecting the country’s industrial sector.

SPD co-leader Bärbel Bas said the coalition could not simply continue as it had been. Another party leader, Lars Klingbeil, said the government needed to better understand why many people in Germany were feeling uncertain about their economic future.

Despite these differences, the coalition remains in place. Merz still has the support needed to continue his government’s work, although disagreements could make it harder to pass some economic reforms.

The AfD’s strong performance has become a major issue in German politics. The party has taken a tough position on immigration and supports closer energy ties with Russia. Germany’s established parties have generally refused to work with the AfD, maintaining what is often described as a political “firewall.”

Berlin’s election produced a different shift. Die Linke gained support by focusing on issues such as housing costs, rents and the role of large property companies. The results in both states show that voters are moving towards parties on different sides of the political spectrum.

For Merz, the immediate task is to manage pressure within the CDU while keeping his coalition together. Business groups have also called for the government to continue economic reforms, saying Germany needs stronger growth and improved competitiveness.
