Macron Urges Iran to Halt Attacks, Restore Strait of Hormuz Shipping

French President Emmanuel Macron has urged Iran to stop regional attacks and ensure safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, warning that continued Middle East tensions could further destabilize the region and threaten global energy supplies.

Macron made the remarks during a phone call with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Sunday, calling on Tehran to halt attacks carried out directly or through allied groups operating across the region.

According to the French presidency, Macron said such actions were intensifying regional instability and creating risks for international shipping routes.

In a message posted after the conversation, Macron said he had asked Iran to immediately end strikes targeting countries in the region. He also said that France’s military presence in the Middle East is defensive and intended to protect French nationals, regional partners and commercial maritime traffic.

The French president also stressed the need to restore navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping lane through which a large portion of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas exports pass. Recent tensions in the Gulf have disrupted maritime traffic and increased concerns over oil supply routes and global markets.

The waterway has become a focal point of rising tensions after Iran warned vessels about crossing the strait following earlier strikes by the United States and Israel on Iranian targets. Security concerns and attacks on shipping have already led some tanker operators to avoid the route, while insurance costs and freight rates have increased due to the Hormuz shipping crisis.

Macron also raised broader security concerns during the discussion, including Iran’s nuclear program, ballistic missile development and involvement in regional conflicts. He said diplomatic efforts were needed to reduce tensions and prevent further escalation in the Middle East conflict.

France has increased its military presence in nearby waters in recent weeks, deploying naval assets to monitor maritime activity and support efforts to safeguard global shipping lanes. Officials have also discussed escort missions for merchant vessels if threats to navigation continue.
