Elon Musk to Make X's Recommendation Algorithm Public in 7 Days

Elon Musk has said that social media platform X (formerly Twitter) will make its recommendation algorithm public within seven days, a move aimed at increasing algorithm transparency around how content is shown to users on the platform.
In a post on X, Musk said the company will release the full code behind its content ranking system, including how organic posts and advertisements are ranked and surfaced in user feeds. He added that the company will also share detailed developer notes explaining changes made to the algorithm. According to Elon Musk, this process will be repeated every four weeks so users and developers can track updates and understand how the system evolves over time.
The announcement comes at a time when large technology platforms face closer regulatory scrutiny, particularly in Europe. Regulators have raised concerns about how algorithms influence public discourse, amplify certain content, and affect user behaviour.
- Elon Musk says X will publish its recommendation algorithm within seven days
- X plans regular public updates explaining how posts and ads are ranked in feeds
- Move comes amid rising regulatory scrutiny of social media algorithms in Europe
X is currently required to preserve internal data related to content moderation and algorithmic decisions as part of ongoing oversight under the European Union Digital Services Act.
For years, users and researchers have questioned how X’s “For You” feed prioritises posts, often citing sudden shifts in visibility, engagement, or reach. Critics argue that a lack of clarity has made it difficult to assess whether political views, commercial interests, or other factors play a role in content promotion.
Musk has previously spoken in favour of open source algorithms, saying public access to code can help identify flaws, biases, or unintended consequences. X has released portions of its code in the past, but this would be the most extensive disclosure of its recommendation system so far.
Industry observers say publishing the algorithm could allow developers, academics, and watchdog groups to examine how social media algorithms work on one of the world’s most influential platforms. It may also set a precedent for other companies facing calls for greater platform accountability.

While questions remain about how accessible or understandable the released code will be to the general public, the move signals a clear shift toward openness in how X manages content distribution on its platform.
