Key Highlights

  • Elon Musk announces tentative June 22, 2025 launch in Austin with 10–20 remotely supervised Model Y robotaxis.
  • Tesla plans autonomous “factory‑to‑customer” vehicle delivery June 28, safety emphasized, wider rollout across U.S. cities planned.

Elon Musk said Tesla Inc. has tentatively set June 22 as the start date for its robotaxi network.

Musk stated in a post on his social media platform X that the date could change because Tesla is "super paranoid about safety."

In the post, Musk also stated that Tesla plans to autonomously deliver a vehicle from the factory to a customer's home on June 28, the CEO's birthday.

Tesla executives, including Musk, shared a video on Tuesday of one of their vehicles driving in Austin with no one behind the wheel, implying that the company is close to launching its robotaxi service in the Texas capital.

In the video posted to X, a black Model Y with the word "robotaxi" on its front door turned off South Congress Avenue in a tourist area of the city. Musk posted the video on his X account, as did Ashok Elluswamy, who leads Tesla's Autopilot teams and recently took over management of the company's Optimus humanoid robot program.

Previously, Bloomberg reported that Tesla planned to begin operating its robotaxi network on June 12. The company has been testing self-driving Model Y SUVs, which will be used in the operation's early stages. Model Ys with manufacturer plates and a driver have been spotted driving through Austin, including South Congress.

The vehicles are expected to use a "unsupervised" version of Full Self-Driving, Tesla's suite of driver-assist systems. In a separate X post, Musk stated that the vehicle in the video was running a new version of software.

Elon Musk has staked his electric vehicle company's future on robotics, autonomy, and artificial intelligence. He has stated that the robotaxi launch in Austin will begin small, with as few as ten to twenty vehicles, before gradually increasing. It is unclear who will be the first to use the robotaxi service, which app will be used, and how much rides will cost.
