Eduardo Bolsonaro to be Tried for Seeking Trump's Help in Brazil Case

Brazil’s Supreme Court has moved ahead with charges against Congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro, clearing the way for a trial over allegations that he sought help from former U.S. President Donald Trump to influence legal proceedings involving his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro.
The case was accepted by a panel of Supreme Court justices after the Prosecutor-General accused Eduardo Bolsonaro of using his political position to pursue foreign pressure on Brazil’s institutions. According to prosecutors, he contacted Trump and his allies in an effort to challenge the criminal cases faced by his father, who was convicted earlier this year for planning to overturn the 2022 election results.
Justices Alexandre de Moraes, Flávio Dino and Cristiano Zanin voted to accept the charges. Justice Cármen Lúcia had not yet cast her vote at the time of the announcement, but a majority had already been reached. The charges include coercion and acting against the interests of the Brazilian state.

Investigators say Eduardo Bolsonaro pushed for steps that could create diplomatic friction, including encouraging the U.S. government to raise tariffs or apply pressure on Brazil’s judiciary. Eduardo Bolsonaro has denied any wrongdoing, arguing that his discussions abroad focused on concerns about due process, not on trying to overturn his father’s conviction.
The case adds new tension to Brazil’s political environment, already strained by Jair Bolsonaro’s 27-year prison sentence for his role in the attempted disruption of the 2022 election certification. Trump has repeatedly criticized the conviction, calling it politically motivated, and has openly backed the Bolsonaro family.

If convicted, Eduardo Bolsonaro could face penalties ranging from fines to loss of office. The trial date will be set once the full panel completes its vote and formal procedures are issued.
