Canada PM and Zelensky Discuss Ukraine's Future Ahead of Trump-Putin Summit

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney held a significant phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, emphasizing that Ukraine’s future must be determined by its own people.

The conversation, detailed on the prime minister’s official website, underscored Canada’s unwavering support for Ukraine as global leaders prepare for a pivotal summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, scheduled for August 15 in Alaska.

The leaders Carney and Zelensky further stated that no force can change any international borders, which is evidence of their beliefs concerning the sovereignty of Ukraine. The debate follows intense diplomatic efforts as the U.S remains in the background urging Russia and Ukraine to end their feud.

Trump declared his Alaska summit last week, and gave Russia a self-imposed deadline to commit to a ceasefire or face more U.S. sanctions. However, Zelensky warned that all decisions that left Kyiv out would be dead decisions and Ukraine was important in negotiations.

Both leaders welcomed the U.S. trying to help but stressed that Ukraine needs to be front and center in any talks. Carney doubled down on Canada’s support, backing recent moves by Canada, the EU, and the UK to slash the price cap on Russian oil, hoping to choke off Moscow’s war funds. A White House official mentioned that Trump’s open to having Zelensky join future talks, and U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker even hinted Zelensky might show up in Alaska.

This call comes on the heels of other leaders, like India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, reaching out to both Zelensky and Putin to nudge them toward peace. With the Alaska summit just days away, everyone’s watching to see if it can bring an end to the nearly three-year war that’s hit Ukraine hard, especially in the eastern Donetsk region.
