Britain, Australia, Canada Recognize Palestinian State

In a bold step, Britain, Canada, and Australia announced on Sunday that they now recognize Palestine as a state. The decision comes from growing frustration over the devastating war in Gaza and a shared hope to push for a two-state solution, where Israel and Palestine can exist side by side. However, this move is likely to upset Israel and its close ally, the United States.
This recognition places these three countries alongside about 140 others that support the Palestinian goal of establishing an independent nation in territories occupied by Israel. For Britain, the decision carries extra weight because of its historical role in helping create modern Israel after World War II.
“Today, to revive the hope of peace for Palestinians and Israelis, the United Kingdom formally recognises the State of Palestine.” UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer shared on X.

Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney added that Canada is committed to working toward a peaceful future for both nations. Australia’s leaders expressed similar sentiments, pointing to the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
The Gaza conflict, now nearing two years, began with a Hamas attack in October 2023 that killed 1,200 people and took 251 hostages, according to Israeli figures. Israel’s response has led to over 65,000 Palestinian deaths, mostly civilians, along with widespread hunger, destruction, and displacement, Gaza health officials report. Heartbreaking images of suffering, especially among children, have sparked global anger and pushed Western leaders to act.
Israel’s Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir slammed the decision, calling it a reward for “murderers” and vowing to propose annexing the West Bank and dismantling the Palestinian Authority. Meanwhile, Palestinian Foreign Minister Varsen Aghabekian Shahin praised the move, saying it brings Palestine closer to independence, even if it doesn’t stop the war immediately.

More countries, including France, may follow at the UN General Assembly. While this recognition boosts Palestinian hopes, it risks straining ties with Israel and the U.S.
