U.S. President Donald Trump and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer met at Chequers on Thursday to discuss a major $205 billion U.S. investment in the UK, aiming to strengthen the historic "special relationship" between the two nations.
The meeting followed a day of royal fanfare, including a carriage ride with King Charles and a grand state banquet, marking Trump’s second state visit to the UK.
The investment package, covering tech, energy, and life sciences, is a big win for both countries, promising to create jobs and deepen ties. Starmer, who’s been working hard to build a strong connection with Trump since his return to the White House in January, called the deal a game-changer for UK-US cooperation.

But the visit wasn’t all smooth sailing—a planned press conference risked tough questions about both leaders’ past links to Jeffrey Epstein, especially after Starmer recently dropped Peter Mandelson as U.S. ambassador over similar concerns.
The leaders also tackled major global topics, like trade, Ukraine, and Iran. Starmer stressed his commitment to open trade while protecting UK interests, a point he’d made in a recent call with Trump. They discussed tricky issues like Ukraine, where Starmer pushed for a U.S. security guarantee as peace talks with Russia loom, and Israel, where their views don’t always align.
Despite facing heat at home over issues like Gaza and foreign aid cuts, Starmer used the visit to show he’s a strong player on the world stage. Experts say he’s walking a tightrope, balancing global conflicts and economic challenges while dealing with Trump’s unpredictable leadership. Evie Aspinall from the British Foreign Policy Group noted that Starmer needs to stay aligned with Trump on key issues to keep the UK’s interests front and center.

The UK also pledged £1.6 billion to support Ukraine’s defense, showing its commitment to global security. The meeting was a key moment for Starmer and Trump to solidify their partnership amid a complex world.
