Trump Meets Qatar's Leader After Israeli Airstrike in Doha

President Donald Trump sat down with Qatar’s Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani, in New York on Friday, just days after an Israeli airstrike hit Doha, targeting Hamas leaders.

The White House confirmed the talks, which come at a tense moment in the Middle East after the attack stirred global outrage and raised questions about international law.

On Tuesday, Israel launched what it called a “precise strike” aimed at top Hamas officials in Qatar’s capital, where the group’s political leaders have long been based.

The attack left six dead, including two Hamas members and a Qatari security officer. Qatar called it a “cowardly” move that could undermine U.S.-backed efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza.

Hamas said its key figures escaped, branding the strike a “heinous crime.”

Trump wasn’t happy with Israel’s decision to act alone, saying it didn’t help the U.S. or Israel’s goals. “Qatar’s a solid partner, and bombing their capital isn’t the way to go,” he said, stressing the need to tackle Hamas without straining alliances. The U.S., alongside the UN Security Council, voiced “deep concern” and called for calm to avoid a wider conflict.

Qatar, a major player in Gaza ceasefire talks, slammed Israel for jeopardizing peace efforts but pledged to keep mediating. Sheikh Mohammed told the UN Security Council that Israel’s actions were reckless. An emergency meeting of Arab and Islamic leaders is planned for Sunday in Doha to address the crisis and chart a path forward.

Trump and Sheikh Mohammed’s discussion centered on pushing for a Gaza ceasefire and freeing Israeli hostages. Qatar, working with Egypt, has been key in these negotiations, despite recent setbacks. After the attack, the U.S. embassy in Doha told Americans to stay put due to heightened security risks.
