During his address at the Human Rights Council, Saudi Arabia’s Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, Ambassador Abdulmohsen bin Khothaila, reiterated the Kingdom’s unwavering support for Sudan's stability. He stressed Saudi Arabia's commitment to resolving the crisis through dialogue and called on the warring factions to prioritize the safety of civilians and the preservation of institutions.

Jeddah Talks: A Key Pillar of Regional Diplomacy

Ambassador Khothaila stressed that the Jeddah-mediated talks led jointly with the U.S. resulted in ceasefire deals which strengthened political dialogue among the parties. The peace talks began in May 2023 with the purpose of lowering violence which displaced more than 6 million people as well as causing 13,000 deaths. Saudi Arabia stands by its commitment to create new dialogue frameworks for dialogue which should include African Union members and IGAD organizations as regional partners.

KSrelief received $100 million from Saudi Arabia to operate humanitarian programs according to the ambassador. Through this financial support Saudi Arabia has enabled food distribution and medical supply delivery as well as emergency evacuations for people from 110 different nations totaling over 8,000 individuals. According to Khothaila the continuing delay in relief assistance threatens to make the existing food shortage problem worse because 25 million Sudanese battle life-threatening food shortages.

Joint Routes to Lasting Peace

Saudi Arabia appealed to all international bodies to join collective efforts to transform conflicts while building shared governance structures. Khothaila stressed that lasting peace requires Sudanese control of national initiatives together with protection of economic infrastructure while also rejecting external attempts at interference in Sudanese political matters. Saudi Arabia provided full support to the United Nations’ plea for $2.7 billion to alleviate Sudan’s worsening crisis.

After his speech Khothaila stressed how Sudan’s development requires regional stability while emphasizing Saudi Arabia stands ready to mediate and defend Arab unity. International forums should serve as platforms to boost Sudanese perspectives in order for their national aspirations to become central to democratic change in their country.
