Shifting Power Dynamics: Is the World Heading Towards Multipolarity?

Technology, Security, and Energy in a Multipolar World

In the modern world, the technological control and innovation have become the primary features of power. Artificial intelligence, specifically, has become an important battlefield. Countries are spending a lot of money on AI in pursuit of economic, military, and strategic benefits.

The US and China are accelerating their competition in the field of AI, as both nations aim to lead in the sphere of machine learning, quantum computing, and semiconductors. The implications of this technological rivalry are far reaching, affecting global trade, national security among others.

Another area that is changing dramatically is energy. The shift to renewable energy sources is decreasing the reliance on fossil fuels and changing the geopolitical ties. The nations that spend on solar, wind, and green hydrogen technologies are setting themselves to be the leaders in a new energy order.

Meanwhile, the world is increasing its defense expenditure as countries react to rising uncertainties. War is changing out of the battlefields onto cyberattacks, information warfare, and hybrid strategies. These trends represent the wider change towards less traditional conflict.

There is an additional layer of complexity in terms of competition over the availability of critical resources, especially the rare earth minerals. These substances are required in a contemporary technology, such as electric vehicles, smartphones, and defense systems. Their supply chains are becoming strategic priorities, which creates more competition in areas like Africa, South America, and the Arctic.

“Technological leadership, especially in artificial intelligence, will determine the balance of power in the 21st century. Nations that lead in innovation will shape the global order.” — Xi Jinping, President of China
