Jeffries Backs Mamdani for NYC Mayor, Boosting Democrats Late

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries finally ended the guessing game on Friday, announcing his support for Zohran Mamdani in the tight race to become New York City’s next mayor.

Jeffries, who represents parts of Brooklyn in Congress, had stayed quiet since Mamdani, a 33-year-old state lawmaker and self-described democratic socialist, won the Democratic primary in June.

The younger man’s victory surprised many and set up a tough general election against former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who is now running as an independent.

In a statement, Jeffries said he respects the voters who chose Mamdani and the young people who got involved in the campaign. He praised Mamdani’s focus on making the city more affordable and keeping people safe, especially Jewish New Yorkers, who have faced a rise in hate incidents.

The endorsement comes at a critical time. Just one day earlier, outgoing Mayor Eric Adams—who is not running again amid his own legal troubles—backed Cuomo. That move is seen as an effort to pull votes away from Mamdani.

The race has drawn national attention. President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and threatened to send the National Guard to the city if he wins. Republicans have used the campaign to paint Democrats as extreme.

Mamdani’s team welcomed Jeffries’ support, calling it a sign of unity. With the election on November 4, the backing could help turn out younger voters and strengthen Democratic turnout in a city struggling with high rents and public safety concerns.

Polls show a close contest. Whether Mamdani can build on his primary win or if Cuomo’s experience and name recognition will prevail remains to be seen.
