South Korea’s Unification Minister Chung Dong-young is urging U.S. President Donald Trump to sit down with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during Trump’s upcoming visit to Asia.

Speaking to local media, Chung called the trip a golden opportunity to promote peace, according to Yonhap news agency.

Trump will travel to Malaysia, Japan, and South Korea starting Friday night, his first trip to the region since becoming president in January.

Chung, who oversees South Korea’s policies on North-South relations, described the visit as a rare chance to improve North Korea’s standing in the world and help its struggling economy.

“This is a moment they can’t afford to miss,” he said, encouraging both leaders to take a bold step toward dialogue. He believes a meeting could skip the usual lengthy preparations, making it easier for the two to connect.

Trump and Kim have met three times before, including a memorable 2019 meeting at the demilitarized zone (DMZ) between the two Koreas. Those talks, however, didn’t lead to a deal on North Korea’s n: uclear program, as disagreements over sanctions and nuclear facility dismantlement stalled progress.

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and other officials are doubtful a meeting will happen next week but would welcome any progress in talks with North Korea. Chung stressed that a summit could boost North Korea’s global image and improve life for its people by fostering peace and stability.
