Code and Consciousness: Embracing a Dual-World Career

By Nadia Carta, Global Head of Agency, Google

In an exclusive conversation with Global Leaders Insights, Nadia Carta, Global Head of Agency at Google, shares how her journey from a young programmer in Sardinia to a global technology leader shaped her belief that innovation must always serve people. Drawing on nearly two decades of experience leading global partnerships and AI-driven transformation, she explains why the future of leadership lies at the intersection of technology, emotional intelligence, and purpose. Carta discusses building resilient, high-performing teams, balancing artificial intelligence with human values, and helping leaders achieve sustainable success through empathy, self-awareness, and authentic leadership. She also offers her perspective on how code and consciousness together will redefine the future of work, empowering organizations to unlock human potential in the age of AI.

How has combining technical expertise with self-awareness shaped your leadership?

Combining technical expertise with self-awareness has completely transformed how I lead. As a Tech Executive at Google and an ICF-certified executive coach, I've learned that the hardest challenges in business are rarely just technical—they are human. Understanding the logic of systems (which goes back to my early programming days) allows me to navigate complex data, AI strategy, and multi-billion dollar portfolios.

But self-awareness is what enables me to hold space for the people driving that technology. It's about leading with empathy, recognizing when a team is bordering on burnout, and fostering psychological safety. When I stepped in to lead the WPP & Google DeepMind project for Cannes, or established the #itsuptome DEI movement in EMEA, success didn't come from pushing harder; it came from aligning disparate stakeholders, practicing active listening, and bringing my authentic self to the table.

What leadership principles have guided you through periods of change and growth?

Throughout my 17 years at Google, navigating massive platform shifts from DoubleClick and GDPR to our current AI revolution, three core principles have been my north star. First is leading with "Zeal"—approaching every challenge with an infectious, high-performing energy that transforms fear into inspiration. Second is the principle of "coaching over directing."

Through Erickson Coaching and my work guiding over 1,200 leaders, I've realized that the best leaders don't give answers; they ask the questions that help others discover their own "AI moment" and superpowers. Lastly, collaboration and influence without authority. Whether scaling global partnerships or aligning cross-functional teams, true leadership is about bringing people together to build a collective playbook for innovation.

What inspired you to build a career that bridges technology and consciousness?

My journey began when I was a 14-year-old growing up in a modest home on the beautiful island of Sardinia, Italy. I attended a computer programming high school, where my mother bought me a Commodore 64 so I could spend endless nights writing COBOL code. At the time, my world felt small, but when we got internet access when I was 16, everything changed. That glowing screen became my window to the world and a profound tool for personal agency—it gave me the freedom to design my own destiny. This early experience made me realize that technology is not just about lines of code or innovation; it is a tool for human empowerment.

Over my 17-year journey at Google, managing large portfolios and leading teams, I have made it my mission to ensure that as we build cutting-edge technology like AI, we keep human values and emotional intelligence at the center. Bridging these two worlds is what led me to establish my Spark Your Zeal movement, helping leaders find soul-aligned success without burnout, and co-host the 99 Humans podcast, where we celebrate authentic, human-centric leadership.

How can leaders balance innovation, AI, and human values in today's world?

We are witnessing the end of "data management" as we know it and the beginning of data activation. In this era of rapid AI development, the temptation is to focus solely on optimization and speed. But as leaders, we must remember that AI should be a collaborative partner to human creativity, not a replacement for it. During our Cannes Lions panel on AI x Creativity, we discussed how machines and humans create together.

To balance innovation with human values, leaders must use technology to elevate human potential. We must use AI to handle manual execution so that our teams have the space to engage in high-level strategic thinking, creative expression, and empathetic connection. Technology is the tool, but human artistic judgment and values are the competitive differentiators.

How do you build resilient teams that embrace both innovation and empathy?

Building resilient teams requires creating an environment where psychological safety and high performance coexist. On the Google/WPP Global Partnership Team, we navigate intense ambiguity and tight timelines daily, which requires immense agility. I build resilience by ensuring my team feels deeply supported and empowered to take risks.

We openly discuss mental well-being and set clear boundaries to manage burnout—a topic I'm incredibly passionate about. By combining rigorous, goal-oriented technical execution with deep empathy and open communication, we transition from being merely productive to being truly inspired. When a team knows they have the freedom to fail and the support to grow, they naturally embrace innovation with open hearts.

What key lessons have you learned from navigating these two distinct worlds?

The most profound lesson I've learned from navigating the fast-paced corporate tech world and the reflective space of consciousness and coaching is that they are not actually distinct—they are deeply interconnected. Code and consciousness are two sides of the same coin. Code gives us the structures, tools, and scalability to build the future.

Consciousness gives us the purpose, emotional intelligence, and ethical grounding to ensure that future is worth living in. I've learned that true "Soul-Aligned Success" occurs when your technical work aligns with your inner values. You don't have to leave your spirit at the door when you enter the boardroom; in fact, bringing your full humanity is exactly what makes you a transformative leader.

How will code and consciousness influence the future of leadership and work?

The future of work will belong to leaders who can successfully integrate code and consciousness. As AI automates routine tasks and data activation becomes the norm, the value of unique human qualities—empathy, intuition, storytelling, and ethical decision-making—will skyrocket. We will see a shift from managing systems to inspiring people.

Through my "99 Humans" podcast, we explore this shift constantly: leadership is becoming less about command-and-control and more about human-centric connection. Code will build the platforms, but consciousness will define our culture. The most successful organizations of the future will be those that use technology to liberate human potential, allowing employees to focus on purposeful, creative, and impactful work.

What advice would you offer future leaders seeking purpose alongside success?

My advice is to reject the myth that you must choose between professional success and personal fulfillment. You can manage a multi-billion dollar portfolio and still prioritize spiritual well-being, mental health, and joy. It starts with self-discovery: understand your unique superpower and align it with your work. Don't check boxes just to meet external expectations; instead, find what ignites your passion—your "Zeal"—and protect it.

Build your own "Bright Board of Zeal" of mentors and sponsors, learn to influence without authority, and view every career pivot or platform shift not as a threat, but as a canvas for your growth. Remember that you have the power to write your own story and design your own destiny.
