Simone Biles: Challenging Queen of Gymnastics and Courage

By Simone Biles

Simone Biles, an American artistic gymnast is considered by most people as the greatest gymnast in history. She was born on the 14th of March 1997, in Columbus, Ohio, and has transformed the sport by her formidable strength, accuracy, and adventurous inventiveness. She has defied all odds and done gravity-defying stunts with a lot of practiced consistency thereby becoming a true icon all over the world. Even in addition to the medals, Biles is an influential advocate of both mental health and well-being of the athletes.

Simone Biles has set a new mark of limits when it comes to possibilities in gymnastics. She is 4 times (golds) and a seven-time Olympic medalist, especially in 2016 Rio. The highest decorated gymnast of World Championship, she has a record with 25 world championship medals. A number of moves have been named after Biles; these are so challenging that none of them have been attempted by other gymnasts.

What makes Biles the champion is more than her technical prowess, but her bravery in life beyond the gym. She was all over the news coverage at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics (which took place in 2021) when she featured in multiple competitions but opted not to participate in some of them because of a syndrome called the twisties that prevented her from learning to trust her mind and body once again. Her choice triggered an international debate on mental illness in the world of athletics and gained the appreciation of people at large.

I'd rather regret the risk that didn't work out than the chances I didn't take at all

Other contributions made by Simone are far beyond medals and records. She has turned into an icon of survival, suchness, and activism. She has a legacy of helping people realize the importance of mental health awareness to millions around the world, and her legacy lives on in the way she was able to push the boundaries of what could be done in athletics. Simone Biles is not a legend of the gymnastics world, but of the sports history as a whole.
