Claudia Sheinbaum, President Of Mexico: A Presidency Built On Plans, Not Promises
By Claudia Sheinbaum , President Of Mexico
Claudia Sheinbaum is Mexico’s first woman president and one of the most distinctive leaders in Latin American politics today. A trained scientist turned politician, she brings an academic, evidence-based approach to public life that sets her apart in a region where political careers are rarely rooted in research or climate science.
Born and brought up in Mexico City, Sheinbaum is characterized by an introverted nature and cool demeanor in the society. She is not brash and confrontational as many conventional politicians tend to be. Instead, she likes to explain the policies using data, plans and timelines. This is a refreshing change to supporters, and sometimes is seen by critics as being too technical. Anyhow, it has been her trademark style.
Sheinbaum was initially widely known as Head of Government of Mexico city in the period between 2018 and 2023. She spent the time enhancing transport services, increasing social services, and advancing clean energy and sustainability of cities. The experience of running the largest city in the country contributed towards her gaining an image of an efficient administrator as opposed to an active campaigner.
Government is not about improvisation or speeches; it is about planning, measurement, and responsibility to the people
Sheinbaum is also very symbolic as the first woman-president in the history of Mexico. Her election indicates the transformation of the attitude to leadership and gender roles in the country. Nevertheless she has always positioned her success as communal as opposed to individual and tends to attribute any success to institutions, teams, and continuity and not to herself.
