Zelenskiy Seeks New US Talks to Help End Russia-Ukraine War

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has called for fresh talks with US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner as efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war continue.

Ukraine hopes the proposed meeting will help move discussions forward and find a way to bring the conflict to an end.

On October 13, Zelenskiy said Ukraine had sent proposals to the US for another round of discussions in the coming days.

He also said Kyiv was ready to support US President Donald Trump's proposed energy truce if Russia agreed to follow the same terms.

The move comes after recent talks between Ukrainian officials and the American representatives.

Ukraine Seeks Another Round of Talks With US

The proposed meeting is part of ongoing US peace talks aimed at bringing Ukraine and Russia back to the negotiating table. Witkoff and Kushner recently met Ukrainian representatives in the United States to discuss possible ways to restart diplomatic negotiations.

The discussions included a proposal involving Russian diesel exports as a possible way to encourage Moscow to return to negotiations. However, Ukraine and Russia continue to disagree on several important issues, making progress towards a peace agreement difficult.

In his nightly video address, Zelenskiy said his team had contacted the US side with proposals for further meetings. He added that Ukraine was ready to continue working with Washington to explore possible solutions.

The request shows that Kyiv remains open to diplomatic efforts, although there is no confirmation that a new round of direct talks between Ukraine and Russia will take place.

The United States has been trying to find a way to bring both countries closer to an agreement. However, reaching a settlement will depend on whether Moscow and Kyiv are willing to consider terms that address their concerns.

Energy Truce Could Help Reduce Attacks

Energy infrastructure has become an important part of the latest diplomatic discussions. Trump has proposed a truce on attacks against energy infrastructure, and Zelenskiy said Ukraine would support the plan if Russia also agreed to respect it.

An agreement could help protect power stations and other important facilities from further damage. It could also reduce disruptions to electricity supplies and provide some relief to people affected by the war.

However, the proposal will only work if both countries follow the same rules. If either side continues attacks on energy facilities, the truce could lose its effectiveness.

Damage to energy infrastructure has been a major concern throughout the conflict. Attacks on these facilities can affect homes, businesses and essential services, making it difficult for people to maintain normal daily activities.

The latest proposal also highlights the challenges facing the US as it tries to bring the two sides closer to a peace agreement. Although Washington has explored different diplomatic and economic options, important disagreements between Ukraine and Russia remain unresolved.

For Ukraine, further talks with American officials provide an opportunity to discuss Ukraine security concerns and possible conditions for ending the war. The US, meanwhile, is looking for ways to encourage both countries to resume negotiations and support Russia-Ukraine peace negotiations.

The proposed meeting could offer another chance to discuss the next steps, but a breakthrough has yet to be announced. The focus now is on arranging further talks and determining whether the energy ceasefire proposal and other initiatives can help restart broader peace negotiations.

Whether these efforts lead to progress will depend on the willingness of both sides to engage in discussions and consider possible compromises. The outcome could influence future Ukraine peace efforts and the wider diplomatic response to the conflict.
