US Envoy's Repeated Snubs Spark Rift With France Diplomacy Strain
By Global Leaders Insights Team | Feb 25, 2026
Diplomatic tensions between the United States and France have intensified after U.S. Ambassador Charles Kushner failed to attend multiple formal summonses issued by the French government, prompting Paris to restrict his access to senior officials.
The latest dispute followed Kushner’s absence from a scheduled meeting with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot. The summons was issued after comments from the U.S. embassy regarding the killing of French far-right activist Quentin Deranque.
The U.S. State Department had described the incident as part of a broader threat posed by “violent radical leftism,” a characterization French officials viewed as interference in domestic political matters.

France’s foreign ministry responded by barring Kushner from direct meetings with cabinet-level officials until he provides clarification for his repeated no-shows. Diplomatic sources said the ambassador later spoke by phone with Barrot, stating that he had no intention of meddling in France’s internal affairs. Both sides have agreed to meet in the coming days in an effort to contain the fallout.
The episode adds to earlier friction during Kushner’s tenure. In a previous incident, he published an open letter criticizing President Emmanuel Macron’s government over its handling of antisemitism in France. He subsequently failed to appear when summoned to discuss the matter, drawing further criticism from French officials who cited a breach of diplomatic protocol.
Observers say the pattern of missed summonses and public commentary has strained U.S.-France relations. While Washington and Paris continue to emphasize their long-standing alliance and cooperation on security and economic matters, the dispute underscores sensitivities surrounding sovereignty and the expected conduct of foreign envoys.
