Federal appeals court in the US said it would allow the most broad-reaching of tariffs that President Donald Trump has imposed to date to remain in place as the appeals court considers a lower court ruling that had blocked the tariffs on the basis that Trump had exceeded his authority in imposing them.

According to the US Court of Appeals in Washington, DC the ruling implies that Donald Trump can, at least in the short term, maintain his so-called Liberation Day tariffs on imports foremost US trading partners and a second series of tariffs he imposed on Canada, China and Mexico, news agency Reuters reported.

  • Appeals court permits Trump’s wide-ranging tariffs to remain in place temporarily.
  • The court has yet to rule on whether Trump’s tariffs comply with emergency economic powers.
  • The tariffs have disrupted global markets and challenged supply chain stability.

The appeals court had not decided whether the tariffs are allowed under an emergency economic powers act that Donald Trump had used to justify the tariffs, but it permitted the tariffs to stay in effect as the appeals run their course.
