UN Expert Says World has Allowed Israel to Abuse Palestinians
By Global Leaders Insights Team | Mar 24, 2026
A United Nations human rights expert has raised serious concerns, saying the global community has, in effect, allowed Israel to mistreat Palestinians without facing enough consequences.
Francesca Albanese, the UN human rights expert on the Palestinian territories, made the statement while presenting her latest report in Geneva. She said the lack of strong international action has created an environment where alleged abuses continue unchecked.
The report highlights claims that Palestinian detainees held in Israeli custody have faced harsh treatment, especially since the escalation of the Israel Palestine conflict during the Gaza conflict 2023. Allegations include human rights violations such as physical violence, psychological abuse, lack of food, and denial of basic needs. Albanese described the situation as severe and deeply worrying.

She also pointed to a broader pattern beyond detention centres, suggesting that Palestinians are living under conditions that amount to collective punishment. The report raises concerns about missing detainees and the overall treatment of thousands of people in custody.
According to Albanese, the responsibility does not lie with one side alone. She stressed that continued political backing and the absence of international accountability have contributed to the situation. She called for independent investigations into possible war crimes allegations and legal steps to address the issue.
Israel, however, has strongly denied these claims. Officials maintain that their forces follow international law and that any misconduct is investigated. Israeli authorities have also criticised the UN report Geneva, calling it biased and defending their actions.
The issue remains highly sensitive and contested. Human rights groups and UN bodies continue to raise concerns, while Israeli officials continue to Israel denies allegations and reject the claims.

The report is likely to spark further discussions at the United Nations, where divisions remain over how to respond to the ongoing conflict and ensure accountability.
