Ukraine Parliament Approves Koretskyi as New PM Amid Wartime Reforms

Ukraine's parliament on Thursday approved Sergii Koretskyi as the country's new prime minister, bringing in the former energy executive to lead the government as the Russia-Ukraine war continues.

He won the support of 289 lawmakers in the Verkhovna Rada, securing a comfortable majority to take over the role.

Koretskyi's appointment is part of a wider government reshuffle led by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who is seeking to strengthen Ukraine's leadership during a challenging period.

The new prime minister takes office with the country focused on defending its territory, keeping the economy stable and pushing ahead with reforms linked to its European Union membership ambitions.

Focus on Defence and Economic Recovery

Speaking before the parliamentary vote, Koretskyi said his government would prioritise national defence while working to keep the economy on a steady path. He said maintaining essential public services, supporting the armed forces and protecting the country's financial stability would remain at the centre of the government's work.

He also pledged to continue reforms needed for Ukraine's European Union membership and improve the efficiency of public institutions. Having previously led Naftogaz, Koretskyi is expected to bring his experience in managing one of Ukraine's most important energy companies, especially as the country continues to deal with repeated attacks on its energy infrastructure.

Members of the ruling coalition welcomed his appointment, saying his management experience and understanding of the energy sector make him well suited to lead the government during wartime. They said his focus on practical governance would help Ukraine respond to both military and economic pressures.

Government Reshuffle Marks New Phase

Koretskyi's confirmation is part of a broader cabinet overhaul announced by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to improve the government's effectiveness. The changes are aimed at strengthening state institutions while ensuring Ukraine can continue its defence efforts and maintain support from international partners.

The reshuffle has also prompted political debate, with some cabinet changes drawing criticism from sections of the public. Small protests in Kyiv reflected concerns over the dismissal of senior officials, although parliament ultimately gave strong backing to Koretskyi's nomination.

As prime minister, Koretskyi will play a key role in coordinating Ukraine's economic recovery, attracting international investment and advancing reforms needed for closer integration with Europe. He is also expected to work closely with allies providing military, financial and humanitarian assistance to the country.
