At a meeting with European Union finance ministers in Warsaw on Friday, UK Finance Minister Rachel Reeves made a heartfelt plea for stronger teamwork on defence funding. She believes that by joining forces, the UK and EU can better protect their people and economies in an increasingly uncertain world.

Reeves shared that the UK is stepping up its own defence efforts, planning to spend 2.5% of its national income on defence by 2027. “Working together, we can make sure we’re all stronger and safer,” she said, pushing for shared projects that could spark new ideas and save money in defence industries.

Her comments come after the UK recently promised an extra 2.2 billion EUR to boost its defence sector, focusing on high-tech advancements. Reeves spoke passionately about turning Britain into a global leader in defence technology, creating jobs and keeping the country secure.

The Warsaw gathering gave Reeves a chance to connect with EU leaders and highlight how teamwork could benefit everyone. Even though the UK left the EU, it remains a close neighbor and a key player in European safety through NATO. The group discussed ways to pool resources and align goals, though they didn’t finalize any plans.

EU ministers agreed that sticking together on defence is important, especially with global tensions on the rise. However, some worried about tight budgets or differing priorities between countries. Others were excited about the UK’s enthusiasm and openness to collaborate.
