Turkey Says NATO Adapting to Security Shift, U.S. Remains Engaged

Turkey has sought to reassure its NATO allies that the alliance remains strong despite changing global security challenges, saying the United States is not stepping away from Europe but adjusting its priorities to meet new threats.

Speaking ahead of the upcoming NATO summit, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said the alliance is evolving to respond to a more complex security environment rather than dealing with a decline in U.S. commitment. His comments come as European countries continue debating defence spending, military readiness and Washington's long-term role in the region.

NATO Responds to a Changing World

Fidan said NATO is adapting to a security landscape shaped by the war in Ukraine, tensions in the Middle East and growing geopolitical competition. While these developments have prompted questions about the future of transatlantic security, he stressed that the United States remains committed to the alliance.

He explained that Washington is adjusting its military strategy to address new global priorities, not reducing its support for NATO. According to Fidan, collective defence remains at the heart of the alliance, and member countries must continue working together to tackle emerging challenges.

His remarks follow months of discussion over the U.S. military presence in Europe and calls for European allies to take on a greater share of defence responsibilities. Although the United States has reviewed parts of its military deployment, NATO leaders have repeatedly said the alliance remains united and ready to respond to any security threat.

Turkey, which has NATO's second-largest military and hosts the alliance's Allied Land Command, has consistently underlined the importance of maintaining strong cooperation among member nations during a period of heightened global uncertainty.

Turkey Seeks Stronger Alliance Cooperation

Fidan said the upcoming NATO summit will be an opportunity for allies to strengthen cooperation and prepare for future security challenges. He urged member states to focus on improving defence capabilities, expanding industrial partnerships and building greater strategic resilience instead of concentrating only on troop numbers.

Turkey has also called on its allies to remove restrictions on defence trade with Ankara, arguing that such barriers weaken cooperation within the alliance. Turkish officials believe closer collaboration in defence production and technology sharing would make NATO stronger and better prepared for future challenges.

The summit is expected to focus on increasing defence spending, modernising military capabilities, supporting Ukraine and addressing regional security concerns. Many European countries have already stepped up investment in defence after repeated calls from Washington to share more of the alliance's security responsibilities.

Fidan also highlighted Turkey's strategic position between Europe, the Middle East and the Black Sea, saying the country will continue to play an important role in NATO's operations and regional security efforts.
