Prime Minister Mark Carney revealed that Donald Trump brought up turning Canada into the 51st state of the US during their March phone conversation while both men were in office.

The telephone conversation between Prime Minister Mark Carney and Donald Trump occurred on 28 March at the start of Canadian electoral competition although Carney had not previously disclosed this conversation to the Globe and Mail.

"The president brings this up all the time. He brought it up yesterday. He brought it up before, I said that he did. He has these things in his mind. This is not news,” Carney said at a Thursday campaign press conference.

The Canadian voting process begins on Monday while President Donald Trump's trade measures together with his unwanted statements regarding Canadian statehood govern the national political dialogue. Trump claims to remain neutral in Canadian politics but his statements continue to impact Canadian politics because he previously described Prime Minister Trudeau as a governor and Canadian citizens strongly disapproved.

The steel, aluminum and auto industry tariff policy of Trump has made economic concerns more serious. Prime Minister candidates from all major political parties appeared during a recent French-language debate to explain their approaches toward dealing with Trump's confrontational policies. With Canada hopeful about economic recovery both Mark Carney from the Liberal party and Pierre Poilievre from the Conservative party emphasize confidence in these matters to voters.

In March, when Trump placed a 25% tariff on Canadian-made automobiles, Poilievre delivered remarks "condemning, without equivocation, the unjustified and unprovoked tariffs that President Trump has now announced against our auto sector."

The CBC’s poll tracker demonstrates that Conservative support has caught up to Liberal support while Canadian voters set new early voting records exceeding 7 million.
