Trump Expects Musk to Back Child Savings Plan With SpaceX Stock Gift

US President Donald Trump has said he believes Elon Musk is likely to donate SpaceX shares to support the administration's new Trump Accounts program. Although no official commitment has been made, Trump's comments have fueled speculation that the private space company could become one of the initiative's biggest contributors.

During an interview, Trump said he believes Musk will eventually join several major companies that have already pledged support for the savings program.

"I think he will do that," Trump said when asked whether the SpaceX CEO would contribute company stock. He also referred to commitments from companies such as Micron and Dell Technologies, saying their participation reflects growing corporate interest in the initiative.

The Trump Accounts program aims to create long-term investment accounts for American children. The accounts can receive funding from both the federal government and private donors. Recently, the US Treasury clarified that stock donations can be made using publicly traded company shares, giving businesses and wealthy individuals another way to contribute.

Trump's remarks come after reports that administration officials have discussed the possibility of receiving SpaceX shares for the program. However, neither SpaceX nor the Treasury Department has confirmed that any agreement has been reached.

SpaceX IPO Adds New Momentum

Trump also praised Musk following SpaceX's IPO, which reportedly raised around $86 billion. The offering became the largest initial public offering on record and further increased Musk's personal wealth while highlighting SpaceX's growing importance in the global space and technology sectors.

The president said he personally congratulated Musk after the listing.

"I wrote him a note saying, 'Congratulations, very good,'" Trump said, adding that he continues to have a good relationship with the billionaire entrepreneur despite past differences.

The relationship between Trump and Musk has gone through several phases over the past two years. Musk was one of Trump's major financial supporters during the 2024 presidential campaign and later took part in efforts to reduce the size of the federal government. However, the two later disagreed over Trump's tax and spending legislation, with Musk publicly arguing that the bill would significantly increase the federal deficit.

Despite those differences, recent events suggest their relationship has improved. Musk attended a White House dinner for Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman last year, and Trump's latest remarks indicate that the administration expects continued cooperation with the SpaceX founder.

For now, there is no official confirmation that Musk or SpaceX will donate shares to the Trump Accounts program. Discussions are believed to be ongoing, but details such as the size, timing, and structure of any possible contribution remain unclear.

If a donation eventually takes place, it would become one of the most high-profile corporate contributions to the Trump Accounts initiative. It would also mark another step in the renewed relationship between Trump and Musk while giving additional momentum to a program aimed at helping American children build long-term financial savings.
