The death toll from a mass shooting at Sydney’s Bondi Beach has risen to 16, police said on Monday, as authorities continued investigations into what has been declared a terrorist attack targeting a Jewish Hanukkah gathering.
The Bondi Beach shooting took place on Sunday evening during a “Chanukah by the Sea” event near Archer Park, a popular section of the beach. Police said hundreds of people were present when gunfire erupted, triggering panic as attendees fled the area or sought cover. Emergency services were alerted shortly after 6:40 p.m.
Investigators said the alleged attackers were a father and son. The older man, aged 50, was shot dead at the scene during a police response. His 24-year-old son remains in critical condition in hospital under police guard. Authorities confirmed that at least 40 people were injured, including two police officers who were treated for gunshot wounds.

Police said a civilian, identified as Ahmed al Ahmed, intervened during the attack by tackling one of the gunmen and attempting to disarm him. The civilian sustained serious injuries and remains hospitalised. Senior officers said the intervention likely prevented further casualties.
A vehicle linked to the suspects was found nearby and contained improvised explosive devices, which bomb disposal units later rendered safe. No additional suspects are being sought, police said, adding that the investigation is focused on motive, planning, and potential ideological links.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the shooting as “a devastating act of violence” and offered condolences to the victims’ families. He said security agencies would review the incident and assess whether changes to public safety measures or firearms regulation were required.
